State Rep. Greg Evers on Monday filed a proposal to crack down on illegal immigration.

Evers, R-Baker, follows Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, and Rep. Kevin Ambler, R-Tampa, in filing immigration bills for possible consideration in the special session that begins today.

Evers said his bill mirrors Arizona's law that allows law enforcement greater powers to check the immigration status of suspects.

The immigration proposals join a raft of other bills ranging from alternative-energy proposals and changes to state-worker retirement benefits that have been filed and are unlikely to go anywhere this week.

Evers, a candidate for the state Senate, acknowledged that.

"While this special session may not be expanded to other issues, I am committed to making sure that this critical issue remains our high priority," Evers said in a release. "I will keep filing this legislation until we can pass it."
