Weekly Update From Senator Greg Evers

August 19, 2011

This week, I have received numerous calls and emails from concerned constituents regarding the Dorcas Fire District Board of Commissioners’ decision on July 7, to raise fire assessment fees and remove the cap of $50, which represented the maximum landowners could be charged. This is an issue of critical importance and concern for northern Okaloosa county residents, and for good reason.

I believe the board has greatly exceeded its authority by removing the cap on fire assessment fees and puts landowners at great risk of seeing substantial and unnecessary increases in their rates. I have contacted the Department of Revenue about the issue and have requested they thoroughly evaluate the board’s decision and whether or not they have exceeded their authority and are placing an excessive financial burden on their constituents.

I am hopeful that we will hear back from the Department and will come to a conclusive solution to this problem. I am committed to being very watchful as this discussion develops and am willing to use the resources available to me to revert this decision and put this issue to rest.

On another note, I would like to take this opportunity and wish all of our students and their parents good luck and a succesful start of a new school year.
