Rep. Evers is Closer to Senate Seat

Pensacola News Journal , August 25, 2010

Greg Evers is one step closer to moving from the Florida House of Representatives to the state Senate.

Evers, the current District 1 representative, defeated political newcomer Mike Hill for the Republican nomination for the Florida Senate, District 2 seat. District 2 includes parts of seven Northwest Florida counties.

Evers will face a tea party candidate and a write-in candidate in the Nov. 2 general election. The incumbent, Sen. Durell Peaden, a Crestview Republican, is being forced out because of term limits.

Evers, 55, has been a state representative since 2001. He was prohibited from running for re-election because of term limits as well.

"I'm humbled and honored that the voters in Northwest Florida have selected me to be their Republican candidate for the Florida Senate, District 2," Evers said from an election night party at a downtown Milton toy store. "I ran because I'm a proud, conservative fifth-generation Floridian, farmer and small businessman, and I ran because I believe together we can make Northwest Florida great."

Evers said he will continue to hammer a conservative message in the lead-up to the general election.

"I believe that the true and tested conservative candidate in this race prevailed tonight, and I am certain that our campaign will prevail again in November."

Hill said he was "at peace with the race we ran."

"It was clean and above board and we got out an important message," said Hill, a 10-year Air Force veteran and current Pensacola insurance agent. Hill ran on a platform of "limited government, low taxes and personal freedom."
