Senator Greg Evers Files Legislation Supporting Florida Veterans

(Tallahassee, Florida) – Panhandle Republican Florida State Senator Greg Evers has filed several legislative proposals that would benefit Florida’s United States Armed Forces veterans.

The first bill, Senate Bill 138, named the “T. Patt Maney Veterans’ Treatment Intervention Act,” would provide that veterans found to have committed a criminal offense may have a hearing on that issue before sentencing — where they may maintain that the offense resulted from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or another physical or psychological problem that stemmed from service in combat.

“Through the creation of these ‘veteran’s courts’ it is my sincere hope that we can provide the necessary treatment to the men and women who served our country in wartime,” Evers said of the bill he is co-sponsoring.

Senate Bill 94 would allow priority course registration for veterans who meet eligibility requirements at Florida College System institutions and state universities. It would also encourage independent post-secondary schools to provide priority course registration for veterans.

Senate Bill 310 would require the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to issue Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross license plates, without requiring payment of the license tax, to service men and women who received those awards in service to our nation.

Senator Evers, also a former member of the Florida House of Representatives, is a top member of the Republican leadership in the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.
