Weekly Update from Senator Greg Evers

October 14, 2011

I appreciate all of you who joined us at the Bay County Legislative Delegation meeting on Tuesday night to discuss your priorities for the upcoming legislative session. It was wonderful to see those of you who came in representation of less fortunate neighbors and friends who, for different reasons, could not physically attend but wanted their voices to be heard.  We are facing another year of cuts to our state’s budget and we will need to give all requests some thorough evaluation. I believe the single most important source of information we can get, as we seek to address our most pressing issues, is through public testimony and open discussion with members of our communities, just as we received throughout Tuesday’s meeting. I want to congratulate our new Chairman of the Bay County Legislative Delegation, Representative Jimmy Patronis, and I look forward to our continued efforts together.

As my fellow colleagues and I stated during the meeting, repealing the septic tank inspection law is our top priority for the upcoming session, as it should be.  Let that be the drive for our Northwest delegation next year and make sure we pass this repeal.

Yesterday, I was able to meet with the construction contractors of the FAMU Crestview Educational Center renovation project, to discuss the employment opportunities this project will bring to the city of Crestview.  Everyone has been affected by our down economy and I am encouraged to see that some of our skilled and deserving friends and neighbors have a chance to become employed once again.

This event also allowed us to preview the whole project so that we could see what the center is expected to provide for students who plan on pursuing a pharmacy degree here.  When this project is completed, I am hopeful its students will emerge with their degrees into a more sound and stable economy.

We are heading back to Tallahassee for another committee week on Monday and the first order of business will be to present my Senate Memorial 240  in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday morning. The intent of this memorial is to urge Congress to honor provisions of our Constitution, which limit the scope and exercise of federal power over our state.

As always, feel free to email me at Greg@Gregevers.com if you have any questions, issues, comments, suggestions or concerns.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Sincerely,

Greg
