More than 250 attended the meeting concerning SB 550 on Thursday at the DeFuniak Springs Community Center.
Walton County Commissioner Sara Comander commented as a private citizen with a septic tank. State Representatives Brad Drake and Greg Evers told the citizens assembled that the whole legislative delegation from the Panhandle voted against the law, saying a “one size fits all” approach to this issue is not the answer.
The Representatives said they want first to make the law null and vote for a year to either fix or repeal the law.
The audience was from across the region, with a number of husbands and wives attending together. It was stated several times that 80-90% of Walton County residents are on septic tanks.
Concerns raised by citizens included: fraud that might result from this law, fines being too high, Government being the problem not the solution, private property being searched without a warrant, invasion of privacy, money issues, poverty concerns, government strangling citizens to death, and the inability of citizens to abide by this law.
Several indicated that they will not obey this law. One stressed that bureaucrats work for the public, not the other way around. One concluded that he was just standing there getting mad, so he needed to sit down. Several indicated they did not do the damage, so they should not have to pay for it.
