Bill to Decriminalize Accidental Display of Concealed Weapon Heads to House
Senate Bill 234 Has Won the Support of the Senate, Now Heads to the House
Tallahassee, Fla. — Senate Bill 234, as amended, has passed out of the Senate and is now heading to the House. SB 234 provides that concealed weapons license holders are not in violation of the law if and when their concealed firearm is accidentally displayed under certain circumstances.
“I want to thank my fellow Senators for their favorable vote on this good bill,” said bill sponsor Senator Evers. “This bill will protect folks with a concealed weapons carry license, who are law abiding citizens, from undue punishment if their weapon is unintentionally made visible. I can think of numerous ways in which a person can innocently and unknowingly reveal their weapon, and I believe they should not be charged with the crime for it.”
The bill also provides that concealed weapons license holders may store a firearm in their vehicles anywhere the vehicle is lawfully parked. And the bill replaces the current “firearms purchase in contiguous state” law, with language to conform to current federal requirements that allows for the purchase of long guns in other states.
Senator Evers currently represents Florida Senate District 2, which include parts of Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Washington, Bay, and Holmes counties. Previously, Senator Evers served in the House of Representatives, representing Florida House District 1, which includes parts of Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties. He is a farmer and small businessman who was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2001, was subsequently re-elected, and elected to the Florida Senate in 2010. Evers has put his experience in agriculture and business to good use in the Florida Legislature and is proud of his legislative accomplishments on behalf of Florida’s critical agriculture industry, economic development and job creation, and Second Amendment issues.
